Vieques

Isla de Vieques is an island about 8 miles east of the mainland of Puerto Rico, in the northeast part of the Caribbean with waters that are shades of blue, turquoise, and greens. The two most popular Barrios (towns) in Vieques Island are Esperanza, in the south, and Isabel II in the north. Esperanza is known for its fishing tradition and the boardwalk (the malecón) along the beach. Isabel II is the island's capital city where the ferry boats arrive. It is the economic center of town. Government offices, most stores, and all the gas stations are located there.

We took the ferry to Vieques from Fajardo. It took about 1 hour and 15 minutes on very choppy seas. We rented a jeep so we could go beach hopping. (I can't believe we didn't take a picture of our jeep!) Here are some photos of the island. Unfortunately, the water was not the best for snorkeling.

Mural on a fish house - from a distance it looked like snow on the evergreens in the UP, but it turned out to be an underwater coral scene!
